The first (and I think the only) South African TV campaign to ever advertise sports betting. We could have done something with a bunch of athletes scoring goals and making tries or some such montage sports-theme that we all know so well. But, we went the other way. Because when you really do have a bet riding (on anything), every one of us thinks: “Man, I wish could influence who wins – collect a bunch of cash and then shove it in my friend’s faces.”
Orchestra Blue worked tirelessly helping us tie actual sport footage into low-cost TV shoots that got a lot of laughs.
Sadly, despite the potential, SuperSpread’s Sports Betting system was somehow later absorbed into a much more politically correct online betting system that we are all familiar with today. But I’m glad I was around to do a real ad based on a real thought that was an accurate insight into the real gambler’s brain. Today I would have exploded that idea in a million different ways. From real-life stunts, to getting the real scoop on what gamblers really thought on Twitter if they had half a chance to influence the outcome of a real sport’s event, to a phone-in radio contest where the cleverest most devilish plan from a caller would win a grand prize.
